A small break…

Yes, I do have another “neat little snippets of code” addition to my series there - but it’s still in the works. I keep getting more and more snippets, so I’m thinking this is going to be a long-running series. So to wait only for those entries…well…I’d never be able to post anything else!

So, I’m pausing a moment and adding this.

A year ago, today, I started a little experiment. I am happy to report that I have yet to receive a single email from either of those addresses - spam or otherwise. Well…unless you could “test” emails I’ve sent to myself to ensure they were still working. Which they are.

But today, one of the email lists I’m on had an interesting discussion about spam. Someone made a comment that they believed “scraping” of email addresses from websites don’t happen anymore (for the most part) - that it’s a dying practice that’s almost extinct. If this is true, then it renders my experiment a bit pointless.

So, that being said, I’m adding to my experiment. Welcome my new email address:

askingforit@anekostudios.com

Look at that. Right there, wide out in the open. With this one, I am asking to get spam. Hit me with your best shot. Let’s see how long it takes - if it takes any time at all. Who knows? Maybe they’re right - if they are, it’s excellent news!

…and there you have it. It is now Saturday, March 1, 2008, and I check my email - and I have spam. Took ‘em 28 days, but there you go! So it is still going on.

I’m going to keep the experiment running to see how quickly it is before I’m getting hundreds a day to this email address. I’ll keep you all posted!

“…that it’s a dying practice that’s almost extinct…”?

How could they say that? Based on what? 90+% of email is spam - so, they wouldn’t scrape anymore, using other methods to obtain (new) adresses? How naive…

Good experiment - I’m a bit surprised it still took them 4 weeks - would have assumed them to be faster… Let’s see how quick it multiplies from here - keep us posted, ok?

Well, I’d have to find the thread again - which would mean some digging. but the very idea made me want to do this experiment - because if that’s true, then it would explain why my former experiment is so successful (I still haven’t had a single piece of spam to either of those addresses).

But yeah, I’ll definitely keep this updated :)

I haven’t been keeping count. But thanks for reminding me of this - it did get bad enough that I got rid of the email account. And it sure didn’t take long at all! I forget the exact date I disabled it, but It was sometime in June. it was just getting unbelievable amounts of spam by then. I guess once the ball starts rolling, it’s like a snowball.
